just a sub said...

All of our classrooms also have phones in them. I must sound as though I say this often, but as a sub, I do not have access to home phone numbers, etc. I have, however, used the phone to ask for assistance in removing a student. I subbed in a second grade classroom and one particular student, who had given me trouble in physical education when I subbed was, once again, giving me trouble. In the classroom, after a few verbal warnings for disrespect and defiance, I told him the next time I was calling the office to have him leave my room. The principal was out so the secretary came and he would not leave with her either. All of our teachers are female, our principal is male, our guidance counselor is male (but only at a school Tues-Thurs-Fri pm) and our custodian is male. Our secretary had to ask the custodian to assist in removing him from my classroom. He eventually left but not without much commotion. The day he was in the gym with me, I had removed him from the area where I was leading the follow up discussion to the lesson so all students were sitting in their attendance rows. I asked to move to where he was away from other students but could still be part of the discussion. He continued to be disrespectful and bothersome so I told him to go to our principal's office. He refused to leave and there is no phone in our gym. I wasn't going to leave a gym full of second grade students alone while I escorted him upstairs..fortunately, the next class was arriving so that classroom teacher stayed with both classes while I walked him upstairs. He did kick walls and yell but he went upstairs. I did have another incident in the gym and I asked another student to go to the kitchen which is near by to ask for one of the kitchen ladies to come to the gym. She did and then stayed with the students so I could walk another upstairs.

I have subbed in the main office and know of our principal making both good and bad phone calls home..he speaks first and then has the student talk to their own parent. I believe it makes an impact on the student.
